Now you all know me pretty well and you know that I detest the high cost of
advertising, especially if the return on investment is low.  The key is to look for
ways to "Smart Market" your business.  This is not always easy and normally
takes a lot of trial and error.

Here are a few ideas:

Business Cards - Make sure you always have them and pass them out like they
are candy.  Put them on every cork board you see that allows you to do so.

Network - Join organizations such as this one, The Chambers, etc.  Just keep in
mind that not all organizations care about you and your business.

Speak - Offer to speak at conventions and events (things like The Lions Club).

Vehicle - You vehicle can be a moving billboard.  You don't have to go all out,
but get your name on it.  You can do anything from going to Staples and getting
your own vinyl letters, to door magnets, to a full or partial vehicle "wrap".  Just get
your name on it.  Oh, but one thing...Drive sensibly.  You don't want to be
exchanging had gestures with a potential client.

Door Hangers - Depending on your business, door hangers are a relatively
inexpensive way to market, especially if you pass them out yourself.  Just be sure
to attain all applicable permits when doing so.

Web Presence - You have to have it these days.  Just make sure that if you
have a web site or web page built, it is done properly so that online consumers
can find you.  This is complex, but if you want to talk about it, contact me directly.

Yard Signs - Relatively inexpensive and lets neighbors know about you.  People
still like "keeping up with the Jones' ".

Neighbors - When doing a job in a neighborhood, go to the houses on the
street and give them some literature on what products/services you offer.
Remember, most people are followers and not leaders and do what their peers
do.  I have had tremendous success with doing this with my businesses.
